Right-wing outsider Abelardo de la Espriella was inaugurated as Colombia's president on 7 August 2026 after narrowly defeating left-wing senator Iván Cepeda in the runoff, vowing a crackdown on armed groups and confirming that Colombia would join the Shield of the Americas on his first day in office — reversing predecessor Gustavo Petro's refusal to join.
