At her September 18, 2026 mañanera, President Sheinbaum addressed the femicide of Claudia Tacoronte Aguilera, a 21-year-old Spanish exchange student pursuing academic research at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de Morelos, who was murdered in Cuautla, Morelos the previous weekend. Sheinbaum said, "Es muy lamentable este feminicidio y triste. Nuestra solidaridad, nuestro abrazo a su familia, sus amigos y sus compañeros universitarios," and said the case would be investigated under a "cero impunidad" standard. Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch confirmed the arrest of Francisco Javier N., alias "El Trompas," as the presumed perpetrator, obtained via a state arrest warrant, and said investigators were examining whether he may be linked to similar prior crimes; he acknowledged femicides "no se han podido evitar" but remain a government priority. The Morelos state prosecutor's office said it would seek the maximum 70-year sentence against the suspect.
