Day 716 — Sheinbaum Previews Sept 19 National Earthquake Drill, Announces Route 57 Highway Extension to US Border
On September 17, 2026 (Day 716, Thursday), President Sheinbaum held her mañanera in the National Palace's Salón Tesorería, previewing the Segundo Simulacro Nacional 2026, scheduled for Saturday, September 19 at 12:00 noon local time across all 32 states — a date chosen to mark the anniversaries of the 1985 and 2017 earthquakes. She confirmed the drill would use the same seismic-alert tone as a real earthquake, broadcast via cellphone alerts and roughly 23,000 loudspeakers concentrated in Pacific-coast and central states. Separately, the director of Banobras presented the administration's public-private highway program of 19 projects, including extending Federal Highway 57 — which currently links Mexico City through Querétaro, San Luis Potosí and Saltillo — northward to the US border, financed without straining public finances. Sheinbaum also addressed a survey on foreign intervention in Mexico and a US report on drug trafficking, and discussed women's political participation.
