Day 696 — UIF Details $5.8M Recovery From García Luna-Linked Weinberg Network, Earmarks Funds for Guerrero Mountain Schools

On August 28, 2026 (Day 696, Friday), UIF chief Omar Reyes Colmenares returned to the mañanera to detail the mechanism behind the recovery President Sheinbaum had previewed the day before: a civil lawsuit yielded $5,805,693 from companies tied to Mauricio Samuel Weinberg López and Jonathan Alexis Weinberg Pinto, identified as front men for former Public Security Secretary Genaro García Luna. Reyes Colmenares said the network — which received roughly 30 government contracts at inflated prices during the Calderón administration — diverted about 528 million pesos and $727.9 million through shell companies between 2008 and 2018, part of a scheme that also produced a $578.5 million final Florida court judgment in Mexico's favor and drew on legal cooperation with Panama, Spain, the U.S. and El Salvador (61 arrest warrants issued, 17 detentions). Sheinbaum said the newly recovered $5.8M would be the first García Luna-linked funds returned to the public purse and specifically earmarked for schools in the Guerrero mountain region: "El objetivo es que este recurso se destine a escuelas en la montaña de Guerrero." She added that UIF-wide, the unit has blocked 24,622 accounts (7,681 linked to organized-crime members), frozen 8.67 billion pesos, and placed 2,395 subjects under financial monitoring during her administration.
