Day 609 — Sheinbaum Tells U.S. Ambassador Johnson to 'Respect Mexico's Internal Affairs'; Pemex-Petrobras Deepwater Deal Imminent

| Sheinbaum (2024–)

At her June 2, 2026 (Day 609) mañanera from the National Palace, President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly confronted U.S. Ambassador Ronald Johnson, telling him to 'respect the internal affairs of Mexico.' Johnson had posted on social media criticizing Sheinbaum's May 31 sovereignty rally at the Monumento a la Revolución, calling for an end to 'politicizing' the fight against cartels. Sheinbaum alleged that far-right U.S. groups were coordinating with domestic opposition organizations to undermine her administration. She projected her response on screen during the press conference, stating: 'The ambassador of the United States in Mexico should respect the internal affairs of Mexico.' Sheinbaum also alleged at the mañanera that U.S. Republican groups were using Mexico as a political issue ahead of U.S. November 2026 midterm elections. Separately, Sheinbaum announced that Pemex would sign a collaboration agreement with Brazil's Petrobras 'within days' to leverage Petrobras's expertise in deepwater hydrocarbon exploration and mature field optimization — originating from Sheinbaum's April 24 meeting with Petrobras president Magda Chambriard. The mañanera also featured Health Secretary David Kershenobich, IMSS director Zoé Robledo, ISSSTE director Martí Batres, and IMSS-Bienestar director Alejandro Svarch presenting a dengue update: 2,136 confirmed cases and 4 deaths in 2026, lower than 2024–2025 levels.
