Tren Felipe Ángeles Inaugurated: Buenavista–AIFA Express Opens, Cutting Mexico City–Airport Travel to 43 Minutes Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

On the morning of April 26, President Claudia Sheinbaum and Estado de México Governor Delfina Gómez inaugurated the 'Tren Felipe Ángeles' — the 23.7-kilometer extension of the Tren Suburbano network linking Buenavista station in Mexico City directly to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) in Santa Lucía. The express train cuts the full Buenavista–AIFA journey to approximately 43 minutes, a transformative improvement over the 90-minute road trip under normal traffic. The route opens with seven new stations and departures every 10 minutes between 05:00 and 00:30. Launch promotional fares were set at MXN $11.50 for intermediate station segments and MXN $45 for the complete Lecheria–AIFA leg, while the Buenavista–Lecheria segment uses the existing Tren Suburbano fare structure. The infrastructure benefits an estimated 82,000 residents of Nextlalpan, Tultitlán, Tultepec, and Jaltocan in Estado de México. The federal government acquired the full concession for 5,999 million pesos (approximately $309M USD) on April 23 by buying out Spain's CAF and Omnitren stakes, placing the network under state control via FONADIN. Sheinbaum positioned the inauguration as a key FIFA World Cup 2026 infrastructure milestone — the tournament begins June 11 across 16 U.S., Canadian, and Mexican cities, with three Mexican venues: Estadio Banorte (Mexico City), Estadio Akron (Guadalajara), and Estadio BBVA (Monterrey). The train also resolves long-standing criticism that AIFA, inaugurated by AMLO in 2022, was insufficiently connected to Mexico City's transit network. The inaugural ceremony was symbolically significant: Sheinbaum co-presided with Delfina Gómez, her successor as CDMX Head of Government and now the Morena governor of Estado de México, presenting a unified Morena territorial governance narrative ahead of 2027 midterm elections.
