Authorization for Use of Military Force Signed
President Bush signs the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), passed by Congress with only one dissenting vote (Rep. Barbara Lee). The resolution authorizes the president to use 'all necessary and appropriate force against those nations, organizations, or persons he determines planned, authorized, committed, or aided' the 9/11 attacks. This single resolution becomes the legal basis for the War on Terror for over two decades.
