Prominent Niger Journalist Moussa Kaka Goes Missing Amid Post-Mutiny Crackdown

Moussa Kaka, director-general of Radio Télévision Saraounia and a former Radio France Internationale correspondent, left his office in Niamey around 7:00pm local time on August 31, 2026, and has not been seen since; his family and colleagues have been unable to establish his whereabouts. The disappearance came amid a wave of arrests following the August 29 mutiny at Niamey's Base 101 against Gen. Abdourahamane Tchiani's junta. Human Rights Watch said on September 3 that it feared Kaka had been forcibly disappeared and called for an investigation; Reporters Without Borders voiced similar concern. Kaka was previously arrested in October 2025 alongside five other journalists under Niger's cybercrime law after announcing a news briefing on a government security-funding solidarity drive.
