Armed Militants Kill 19 Civilians in Tillabéri Region Village, Niger

| Sahel Insurgency

Armed militants killed at least 19 civilians and wounded two others in a raid on a village in Niger's Tillabéri Region on April 18. The Nigerien government described the attackers as 'armed bandits,' but the attack pattern — motorcycle-mounted raiders targeting settled civilian communities — is consistent with IS-Sahel Province (ISSP) operations documented extensively throughout Tillabéri in 2025–2026. The attack represents the continuation of a sustained campaign of violence in Tillabéri that has killed over 1,200 people in 2025 alone out of 1,939 total deaths across Niger, according to ACLED. Niger's military junta under Gen. Tchiani declared a 'general mobilization' in December 2025 and intensified counterinsurgency operations, but jihadist attacks have continued unabated. Tillabéri, which borders both Mali and Burkina Faso, became significantly more exposed after the July 2023 coup expelled US and French forces and removed aerial surveillance from Air Base 201 (Agadez) and Air Base 101 (Niamey). The attack also follows the April 2 first-ever ISSP attack on a JNIM position in Niger's Tillabéri — a significant escalation marking the inter-jihadist rivalry's geographic spread into Niger.
