JNIM Attacks VDP Self-Defense Units in Burkina Faso, ~15 Militiamen Killed

| Sahel Insurgency

Around April 17, JNIM fighters attacked a Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) self-defense village in Burkina Faso, killing approximately 15 VDP militiamen. In a concurrent engagement the same week, approximately 20 soldiers were killed in separate attacks on military installations, according to reporting from Pravda Burkina Faso. The VDP-focused attack is consistent with JNIM's sustained campaign to degrade the Traoré junta's counter-insurgency infrastructure: the VDP (Volontaires pour la Défense de la Patrie) are civilian volunteers recruited and lightly armed to defend their communities alongside regular military forces, and they have been a primary target of JNIM given their role as local intelligence assets and forward security presence. JNIM has intensified targeting of VDP units in 2025–2026, with incidents documented in Boucle du Mouhoun, Centre-Nord, Nord, and Sahel regions. The April 13–14 FAB counteroperation in Soum Province that killed approximately 100 militants northeast of Arbinda highlights the reciprocal nature of the violence in this period. Independent verification of these incidents is severely constrained by the Traoré junta's media access restrictions, which have effectively blacked out conflict zone reporting across northern and central Burkina Faso.
