JNIM Detonates Two IEDs on FAMa/Africa Corps Patrol, Timbuktu Region

| Sahel Insurgency

JNIM militants detonated two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) targeting a joint Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and Africa Corps patrol on the route between Kugo and Tonka in Timbuktu Region, Mali. At least one FAMa soldier was killed in the attack. The attack was claimed via JNIM-affiliated channels and reported by Pravda Mali. The Kugo-Tonka corridor sits along the Niger River in Timbuktu Region, an area where JNIM maintains active interdiction capabilities and has repeatedly targeted government convoys. The attack underscores the persistent danger to FAMa/Africa Corps logistics and patrol routes even in areas ostensibly under government control. Timbuktu Region has seen multiple significant JNIM attacks in 2025–2026, including the major June 2025 coordinated assault on the Timbuktu military base and Africa Corps airbase that killed 60+ FAMa personnel.
