G5 Sahel Political-Security Framework Founded by Five Sahel States

Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Chad officially establish the G5 Sahel regional bloc in Nouakchott, Mauritania. Initially a political-economic cooperation framework, the G5 Sahel becomes a security platform in 2017 with the activation of its Joint Force. France and the EU back the group as their preferred framework for Sahelian counter-terrorism regionalization.
