French Forces Secure Kidal — Full Northern Liberation Complete

Thirty French special forces commandos, reinforced by Chadian troops, secure Kidal on January 30. Tessalit follows shortly after. By February 8 the conventional phase of Operation Serval is effectively complete; jihadist forces have dispersed into the Sahara or across borders. French commanders shift focus to counter-insurgency and the systematic hunt for jihadist leadership.
