Nigeria Relocates Great Green Wall National Agency HQ from Abuja to Kano — Closer to Sahel Frontline

| Reforestation

Nigeria's Federal Government announced on June 4, 2026 the relocation of the National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) operational headquarters from Abuja to Kano State, moving the agency's leadership directly to the Sahel frontline. The new headquarters will use the Afforestation Programme Coordinating Unit complex built in 1988 in Kano, repurposing an existing government facility. The relocation is explicitly aligned with President Bola Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes combating desertification and land degradation across Nigeria's northern states as part of its contributions to the broader 11-nation Great Green Wall initiative. Kano State is in northwestern Nigeria, significantly closer to the Sahel degradation front where GGW implementation is most critical. The move is intended to strengthen coordination with frontline states including Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto, Jigawa, Yobe, Borno, and Zamfara — the Nigerian states most exposed to desertification, drought, and land degradation. Nigeria's contribution to the GGW spans a corridor across the northern third of the country. The relocation follows the GGW Observatory launch in Ouagadougou (May 27–29, 2026) where all 11 GGW nations agreed to enhanced accountability reporting.
