Great Green Wall Observatory Launched in Ouagadougou — First Public Accountability Platform for $15B, 302-Project Initiative

A landmark meeting of the 11 participating Great Green Wall (GGW) nations convened in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from May 27–29, 2026, hosted by the UNCCD-administered Great Green Wall Accelerator. The meeting's centerpiece was the formal unveiling of the Great Green Wall Observatory — the first digital multi-stakeholder accountability platform designed to make financial and project management data publicly available across all GGW-participating countries for the first time. The Observatory consolidates tracking of 302+ active GGW projects and $15 billion in financial commitments, providing a consolidated public view of pledges, disbursements, implementing agencies, and on-the-ground restoration progress. Development Gateway, which co-developed the platform's technical architecture, described the Observatory as designed to 'enhance transparency, coordination, and accountability' for the initiative. UNCCD issued a formal statement marking the Observatory's launch as a 'historic step toward closing the accountability gap' between pledged and delivered restoration. The platform's public data access is expected to expose funding shortfalls that had previously been obscured: previous independent assessments found that only ~15% of pledged GGW finance ($2.5B of $19B) had been disbursed as of 2024, and that on-the-ground verified native restoration may cover only 4–8% of the 100 million ha target by 2030. Civil society organizations welcomed the platform but noted that verified remote-sensing data on actual restoration quality — not just financial flows — would need integration to make the Observatory a genuine ecological accountability tool. The Ouagadougou meeting came as the 2030 GGW completion target recedes: at current trajectories, independent analysts assess that 30% completion by 2030 represents an optimistic ceiling, with the initiative's long-term relevance depending on political will across the Sahel's increasingly conflict-affected zones. The launch is nonetheless a significant governance milestone — the first time all 11 GGW nations have agreed to joint public reporting on project and financial execution.
