Google, Meta, and McKinsey separately announced purchases of 131,240 tonnes of carbon removal credits from Living Carbon's existing Appalachian forest projects in the same announcement. Living Carbon's approach focuses on restoring native forest on land too degraded for agriculture, combining site remediation with native species plantings verified under rigorous carbon accounting standards. The deal is significant for several reasons: it signals growing institutional appetite for long-duration nature-based carbon removal beyond short-term offset markets; it demonstrates demand from corporate buyers (Google, Meta, McKinsey) willing to pre-purchase credits from early-stage projects; and it focuses on genuinely degraded land (former mine sites) rather than existing ecosystems, reducing concerns about additionality and permanence.
