Kenya Announces Historic 24-Hour Mangrove Restoration Drive in Mombasa — Guinness Record Holder to Lead
Kenya's State Department for Forestry announced on April 29, 2026, a landmark 24-hour mangrove restoration effort at the Mirarani Site in Tudor Creek, Mombasa County, beginning April 30. Led by a Guinness World Record holder, the drive coordinates the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Kenya Forest Service, EarthLungs Reforestation Foundation, Veritree, Mombasa County Government, and local communities. The initiative supports Kenya's flagship 15 Billion Tree Growing Programme, which aims to dramatically increase national forest and tree cover by 2032. Mangrove restoration is a cornerstone of Kenya's coastal strategy, with mangroves storing up to four times more carbon per hectare than tropical rainforests and providing critical coastal protection and fisheries habitat. Kenya protects 61,000 ha of mangroves by law since 2017, and the Tudor Creek restoration builds on the internationally recognised Mikoko Pamoja blue carbon project in Lamu.
