IonQ Debuts Superion 256, Its Sixth-Generation Trapped-Ion Platform

IonQ unveiled the Superion 256 at its 2026 Investor Day, a 256-physical-qubit trapped-ion system built on its 'Walking Cat' architecture with Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) and CMOS integration replacing laser-based control, designed as the first entry in a Superion product line meant to scale to 10,000+ qubits. Developed with subsidiary SkyWater Technology, the design-to-fabrication cycle compressed from roughly nine months to two, and the system is built to fit standard data-center server racks at a fraction of the power draw of a comparable GPU rack. IonQ is taking orders now, with customer deliveries targeted for 2027, while a separate fault-tolerant Superion 10K platform is in development.
