IonQ announces a world record 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity — the first quantum company to cross the 'four nines' benchmark — using its Electronic Qubit Control (EQC) technology. This surpasses Oxford Ionics' 2024 record of 99.97% and brings trapped-ion quantum computers within reach of fault-tolerant error rates. High gate fidelity is critical because each gate error accumulates across a quantum computation, and fault-tolerant quantum computing generally requires physical error rates below ~0.1%.
