Higgs Boson Discovered at CERN
ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider announce the discovery of a particle consistent with the Higgs boson at ~125 GeV — the last missing piece of the Standard Model of particle physics. The Higgs field, predicted by Peter Higgs and others in 1964 using spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum field theory, gives mass to W and Z bosons and fermions. Higgs and Englert receive the 2013 Nobel Prize.
