Witkoff, Kushner Confirmed for First-Ever Kyiv Visit This Weekend After Kremlin Stop

| Peace Processes

September 4, 2026 — President Zelensky confirmed that Trump envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are set to travel this weekend for their first-ever visit to Ukraine, capping off the date-locking process Zelensky described Aug. 31. The pair are expected to depart Friday, meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Saturday, then travel to Kyiv to meet Zelensky on Sunday — a sequence Russian state media (TASS) reported as Sept. 5-6. Zelensky said 'we expect to see representatives of the U.S. president here in Kyiv' and that talks should be 'as constructive and substantive as possible,' while a Ukrainian official cautioned the visit could still be postponed as previous attempts have been. The trip follows a CIA Director John Ratcliffe visit to Moscow roughly ten days earlier to gauge whether Russian intelligence chiefs could persuade Putin toward diplomacy, and comes as Putin maintains his maximalist preconditions — Donbas cession, NATO renunciation, and Ukrainian demilitarization — that Kyiv continues to reject.
