Fighting Erupts Near Sheraro in Western Tigray in Worst Breach of 2022 Pretoria Peace Agreement

| Peace Processes

August 1, 2026 — Fighting broke out near Sheraro in western Tigray between Ethiopian federal forces and the TPLF, the most serious breach of the November 2022 Pretoria peace agreement to date; the TPLF had declared the deal 'effectively dead' by mid-July. Ethiopian minister Abraham Belay accused the TPLF of initiating the clash and called for dialogue, while Tigray regional authorities blamed a federal blockade and drone campaign and framed the fighting as a matter of 'national survival.' The clash threatened to unravel one of Africa's most closely watched peace agreements of the past decade.
