Israeli Strikes Kill 13+ in South Lebanon on May 8 — Second Round of Lebanon–Israel Talks Scheduled for Washington May 14–15
On May 8, 2026, Israeli forces launched airstrikes in south Lebanon, killing at least 13 people — the deadliest single day of ceasefire violations since the US-brokered framework began April 16. The strikes continued a pattern of systematic Israeli military operations in south Lebanon despite the nominal three-week ceasefire extension running until approximately May 14. Lebanon filed a new formal complaint with the UN Security Council over Israel's 'daily' ceasefire violations. UNIFIL peacekeepers have reported being targeted or obstructed repeatedly since the ceasefire was declared. Total fatalities since the nominal ceasefire began April 17 reached at least 380+, with casualties since hostilities resumed March 2 surpassing 2,700. Over one million Lebanese remain displaced. One diplomatic development amid the violence: a second round of direct Lebanon-Israel talks was scheduled for Washington on May 14–15, part of the US-facilitated framework aimed at moving toward full implementation of UNSC Resolution 1701 and full Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. Lebanese PM Nawaf Salam continues to insist full Israeli withdrawal is a precondition for any durable ceasefire. The Lebanon track remains structurally linked to the broader US-Iran MOU process — any framework addressing the US-Iran war must incorporate Lebanon's status to achieve regional stability.
