Sudan War Marks Three Years: US Imposes Sanctions, Presents Peace Roadmap
On the third anniversary of Sudan's civil war (April 15, 2023–April 15, 2026), the U.S. State Department announces targeted sanctions on five individuals and entities responsible for obstructing peace and humanitarian access in Sudan. Senior White House Adviser Massad Boulos presents a five-pillar peace roadmap including: (1) an immediate three-month humanitarian truce without preconditions; (2) creation of a joint SAF-RSF monitoring mechanism; (3) revival of the Jeddah Platform with AU co-facilitation; (4) a political transition framework; and (5) post-war reconstruction commitments contingent on both parties engaging. International pledges of $1.5 billion in aid are expected. The war has claimed over 150,000 lives, displaced 14 million people internally, and triggered famine conditions in Darfur — making it one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes of the 2020s. The U.S. simultaneously renews appeals to Saudi Arabia to re-engage as co-host of the Jeddah Platform.
