IDF Kills Hamas Commander Who Helped Hold Oct. 7 Abductee Edan Alexander Hostage
The IDF announced Thursday, August 27, 2026 that it struck and killed Ismail Mohammed Ibrahim Barim in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, on Wednesday, August 26. Barim was a Hamas military-wing commander who took part in holding American-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander — abducted from his base during the October 7, 2023 attack — along with fellow captives Matan Zangauker and Avera Mengistu in an underground tunnel in southern Gaza; all three were later freed alive by Hamas in separate releases. The IDF said Barim had recently advanced attacks against troops and Israeli civilians and worked to restore Hamas's military capabilities in systematic violation of the ceasefire, and that the strike was carried out 'to remove the threat.' The killing was confirmed by IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Ella Waweya.
