IDF Announces Elimination of Hamas Platoon Commander Who Held Multiple Oct. 7 Hostages
The IDF announced Friday, August 21, 2026 that it had killed Sabahi Sami Mahmoud Shahata (also transliterated Sobhi Sami Mahmoud Shahtot), a platoon commander in Hamas's military wing, in a Wednesday, August 19 strike in the Nuseirat area of central Gaza. The military said Shahata infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7, 2023 attack and 'took part in holding numerous hostages in Hamas captivity during the war,' and that he was seen participating in Hamas's hostage handover ceremonies in November 2023. The IDF said it struck him despite the ongoing ceasefire because he had been advancing plans for attacks against IDF troops and Israeli civilians, and that precise munitions and aerial surveillance were used to mitigate harm to civilians. The strike follows an August 18 operation in the Al-Shati area that killed four Nukhba commanders from the Beit Lahia battalion, including Samed Samir Harb Abu Habal, a Nukhba platoon commander who also infiltrated Israeli territory on October 7 — part of the IDF-Shin Bet 'Nili' campaign to track down the roughly 5,000 people the military says took part in the October 7 assault.
