Ghana Designates Its First Marine Protected Area

| Ocean Cleanup

Ghana officially declared its first Marine Protected Area on April 14, 2026, following more than 15 years of advocacy by fishing communities, scientists, and NGOs. The MPA uses a co-management model that incorporates traditional ecological knowledge from local fishing communities alongside scientific monitoring data. West African marine protection has historically lagged the global average, making Ghana's designation a milestone for the region. The MPA is expected to support fisheries recovery and coastal biodiversity while providing a legal and management template for neighboring Gulf of Guinea countries.
