AI System BlueBiome Unveiled to Boost Coral Reef Restoration Success Rates
UK researchers unveiled BlueBiome on April 14, 2026 — an AI-driven system designed to assess coral health and detect bleaching thermal stress earlier than conventional monitoring. Approximately 70% of coral reef restoration projects fail because disease and thermal stress are detected too late for effective intervention. BlueBiome uses machine learning to continuously analyze underwater imagery and environmental sensor data, enabling precise early-stage intervention. The system is designed to dramatically improve the survival rates of transplanted coral fragments at a time when the 4th global mass bleaching event (2023–2025) has impacted 84.4% of reef area worldwide.
