First-Ever North Korea–Russia Road Bridge Nears Completion Across Tumen River

Satellite imagery reviewed by Defense News and reported August 26, 2026 shows the first-ever road bridge linking North Korea and Russia, spanning the Tumen River at the Tumangang crossing, is close to completion on the North Korean side — including a finished customs building and controlled entry point — while construction on the Russian side, including border facilities and the connecting road, remains underway. The roughly 1 km, two-lane bridge is part of a wider 4.7 km crossing with approach roads at Tumangang, a Soviet-era rail hub on the DPRK-Russia border that had been largely dormant since 1991. Construction followed the comprehensive strategic partnership pact Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin signed in June 2024, and activity has accelerated since North Korea began supplying Russia with artillery and troops in 2022. Kyiv Post separately reported the Russian side is also building infrastructure including a helicopter landing pad, raising concern the crossing could serve as a secret military corridor. Analysts say the link could open commercially as soon as September, coinciding with Putin's expected attendance at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.
