Kim Jong-un Oversees Tests of AI-Guided Tactical Cruise Missiles and Multipurpose Missile Launcher — DPRK's 8th Weapons Test of 2026

| North Korea

North Korea's state media (KCNA) reported on May 27, 2026 that Kim Jong-un personally supervised tests of three newly developed tactical weapons systems — declared the DPRK's eighth weapons test of 2026. The systems tested from the Jongju area (North Phyongan Province) included: (1) a new lightweight multipurpose missile launching system designed for frontline unit deployment; (2) a multiple tactical cruise missile system featuring terrain contour matching (TERCOM) navigation and an AI-based terminal guidance function capable of striking targets up to approximately 100 km via multimode gliding and powered flight; and (3) a 240mm guided artillery rocket with extended range and autonomous navigation. Kim expressed 'great satisfaction' with the test results and ordered the weapons deployed at long-range artillery units near the southern (Yellow Sea) inter-Korean border. The AI-guided terminal homing is the first publicly claimed artificial intelligence guidance function in a North Korean weapons system — a qualitative step in DPRK precision-strike capability. The simultaneous testing of cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and guided rockets is designed to complicate South Korean and US interception scenarios by overwhelming layered defenses. Testing was conducted by the DPRK Academy of Defence Sciences. South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff called the launches a 'serious provocation' that violates UN Security Council resolutions. The May 27 tests, following the May 25 SRBM launches, constitute the most concentrated North Korean weapons testing activity since April 2026.
