Tinubu Files US Court Motion to Block Release of Alleged Drug Trafficking Records

President Bola Tinubu's US legal team — Christopher W. Carmichael, Victor P. Henderson, and Oluwole O. Afolabi — filed a 16-page brief with the US District Court for the District of Columbia on Friday, August 28, opposing a motion for summary judgment in transparency activist Aaron Greenspan's Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the DOJ, FBI, and DEA. The filing asks the court to let the agencies' redactions and withholdings stand, arguing Tinubu retains a privacy interest in the files even where some material has already been disclosed: "An individual retains a privacy interest in the entire file or document being produced, even where there are 'scattered' disclosures." Greenspan's FOIA requests, filed in 2022–2023, seek the FBI's complete file on Tinubu and Form 302 interview records from 1992–1993 tied to a Chicago heroin-trafficking investigation, plus records connected to a 1993 US civil forfeiture proceeding involving roughly $460,000 linked to Tinubu. Tinubu was never criminally charged and has described the forfeiture as a civil settlement.
