Retired Major General Rabe Batsari Dies in Bandit Captivity in Katsina

Major General Rabe Abubakar Batsari (retd.), former Director of Defence Information of the Nigerian Army, died on Saturday, June 13, while held by bandits in Katsina State, two weeks after he and his wife were ambushed and abducted along the Marabar Musawa–Kafinsoli road in Matazu LGA on May 30. Katsina State's Commissioner for Internal Security, Nasiru Mu'azu, attributed the death to complications from pre-existing diabetes and hypertension; the general's family publicly rejected that explanation, insisting he had no such conditions and demanding an independent investigation. His wife, Hajiya Amina Abubakar, was separately released by the kidnappers. The bandits — led by gang leader Kachallah Muhammad — had been demanding the release of detained associates and the return of confiscated livestock rather than cash ransom, a negotiating pattern security analysts say complicates rescue efforts. His body was handed over to Katsina state officials and family days later; the case triggered national outrage over the vulnerability of even senior retired military figures to banditry in the northwest.
