Tinubu to Address Joint National Assembly Session on June 12 Democracy Day

| Nigeria

The Nigerian presidency confirmed on June 2 that President Bola Tinubu will deliver a special address to a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 — Nigeria's Democracy Day — marking the 33rd anniversary of the annulled June 12, 1993 election that was won by M.K.O. Abiola. The address is expected to highlight economic reform progress and signal Tinubu's re-election campaign message ahead of the 2027 general elections. June 12 became Democracy Day in 2018 when President Buhari recognised Abiola's electoral victory posthumously. Tinubu, who won the APC presidential primary on May 23 with approximately 10.9 million votes, is expected to use the platform to counter opposition narratives about governance failures and cost-of-living hardships.
