Borno Cholera Outbreak Deepens: 39 Dead, 4,204 Suspected Cases Across 7 LGAs

| Nigeria

A rapidly deepening cholera outbreak in Borno State had recorded 39 deaths and 4,204 suspected cases across seven local government areas — Maiduguri MC, Jere, Mafa, Konduga, Monguno, Ngala, and Magumeri — by early June 2026, with 272 new cases reported in a single 24-hour window on June 2. Northern senators called for an emergency national health response. Schools in affected LGAs activated emergency sanitation and prevention protocols. Contributing factors included severely degraded sanitation infrastructure, seasonal flooding, and severe overcrowding in IDP settlements displaced by the ongoing Boko Haram/ISWAP insurgency in the Lake Chad Basin. The outbreak was the most severe in Borno since the 2017 cholera emergency.
