NATO Unveils $40 Billion 'Drone Edge' Counter-Drone Initiative at Ankara Summit
NATO allies announced on July 7, 2026 that they will invest more than $40 billion over five years to expand counter-drone defenses, drone procurement, and operator training under the new 'Drone Edge Initiative,' launched by Secretary General Mark Rutte. The package establishes a NATO-tested, NATO-compatible counter-drone marketplace, aims to train five times as many drone operators by the end of 2027 via NATO Flight Training Europe, and expands surveillance-drone procurement through the NATO Support and Procurement Agency. It marks a shift from isolated national counter-drone efforts toward a coordinated alliance-wide approach.
