KIA Seizes Junta Tank Battalion, Captures Frontline Camps Near Bhamo Airport — Radar System at Myitkyina Air Base Also Destroyed

| Myanmar

The Kachin Independence Army intensified its offensive operations around Bhamo in early June 2026, seizing a junta tank battalion near Bhamo's airport and capturing multiple frontline military camps in the area, as the Battle of Bhamo entered its most decisive escalation phase since December 2025. KIA spokesman Col. Naw Bu confirmed that KIA forces captured frontline camps near Manau Park in Bhamo city and seized the tank battalion, advancing KIA positions deep into the SAC's urban defensive perimeter. Separately, KIA forces destroyed a radar system at Myitkyina Air Base — a significant operational degradation of the SAC's air defense and early warning capacity in Kachin State, potentially affecting the junta's ability to coordinate the 50+ daily airstrikes it has been conducting over Bhamo and surrounding KIA positions. The seizure of a tank battalion marks a substantial battlefield achievement: the captured armor degrades the 3,000-man junta garrison's close-quarters defensive capacity while providing the KIA with additional armored assets. KIA forces have been steadily tightening their encirclement of Bhamo since December 2025. Despite the SAC's deployment of a 300-vehicle armored reinforcement convoy (arrived at Myitkyina Northern Command May 22) and its unprecedented 50 daily airstrikes in the Bhamo theater, the KIA-led coalition has held all captured positions and continued to advance. If Bhamo falls, KIA would control all of eastern Kachin State and the Irrawaddy River corridor from Myitkyina to the Kachin-Sagaing border — one of the most strategically significant potential territorial changes in the war since Operation 1027.
