SAC Forces Burn 5+ Salin Township Villages, Kill 2 Elderly, Take 9 Hostages Including Novice Monk — Part of Magway Region Offensive
Myanmar junta forces invaded and burned at least five villages in Salin Township, Magway Region, killing two elderly residents unable to flee and taking nine people hostage — including a novice monk — as part of a broader SAC offensive launched in late April 2026, according to Mizzima reporting on May 6, 2026. The village arson campaign in Salin follows the broader SAC ground invasion of Yinmabin, Pale, and Kani townships (Sagaing Region) launched May 1 — suggesting a coordinated multi-township offensive to clear PDF-controlled territory in the central Myanmar heartland. Salin Township (Magway Region) sits near the Sagaing-Magway border and has been a PDF operational area since 2022. The killing of elderly civilians unable to evacuate and the taking of hostages (including a religious figure) are consistent with documented junta collective punishment tactics in PDF-controlled areas across Sagaing, Magway, and Chin regions. The use of hostages as human shields has been documented in multiple prior SAC operations in Sagaing Region. Mizzima also reported on the 5th consecutive day of fighting on the Kalay-Tedim road in Chin State, where both sides sustained losses, and a Hero Guerrilla Force attack on the junta gate at Gyobinkauk in Bago Region.
