Chamber of Deputies Passes Sheinbaum's 'Plan B' Electoral Reform 377–102
Mexico's Chamber of Deputies approved President Claudia Sheinbaum's revised electoral reform ('Plan B') with 377 votes in favor and 102 against, backed by Morena, its allies, and Movimiento Ciudadano. The measure caps municipal council positions at 15, limits local congressional budgets, and reduces electoral officials' salaries by an estimated 2 billion pesos. This followed the March 10 collapse of Sheinbaum's original reform, which fell 71 votes short of the two-thirds supermajority needed for constitutional amendments. Opposition parties PRI and PAN criticized the reform as politically motivated and questioned its fiscal impact, while Sheinbaum framed it as a first step toward lowering the cost of democracy in Mexico.
