AMLO Wins Mexico City Head of Government
Andrés Manuel López Obrador won Mexico City's head of government election succeeding Cárdenas. His government implemented pioneering social programs — pensions for elderly, scholarships, loans for small business — that would become national templates. He governed with 58% approval, making Mexico City the platform for his national presidential ambition. He introduced the 'Segundo Piso' elevated highway project.
