Echeverría's 'Democratic Opening' — Apertura Democrática
Luis Echeverría became president promising a 'democratic opening' after the Tlatelolco trauma. He released political prisoners, allowed some press criticism, and promoted a Third World foreign policy. However, his government also carried out the June 10, 1971 Corpus Christi massacre of student protesters and conducted the 'dirty war' against guerrilla movements, disappearing hundreds of activists.
