New Moldova-Romania Electricity Interconnector Comes Online

An additional high-voltage electricity interconnector linking Moldova's grid to Romania's was completed around May 2026, part of a EUR 270 million package financed by the EU, EIB (EUR 80m), EBRD (EUR 80m) and World Bank (EUR 70m loan plus a EUR 40m EU grant). The link is intended to reduce Moldova's reliance on electricity generated at the Russian-controlled Cuciurgan plant in Transnistria — which has supplied up to 80% of Moldova's power — with two further interconnectors planned by the end of 2027 and 2029 to eventually integrate Moldova into the European ENTSO-E grid.
