Sheinbaum Announces Mexico Will Seek US Criminal Charges Over ICE-Related Deaths of Mexican Citizens

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that Mexico is formally lodging requests with US prosecutors for criminal charges over the deaths of Mexican nationals killed by US immigration authorities or who died in ICE custody. The announcement came a week after ICE agent shot and killed Mexican citizen Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston on July 7. According to Sheinbaum's government, Salgado Araujo was the 17th Mexican national to die during ICE raids or in immigration custody since President Trump returned to office. The move marked one of the most assertive diplomatic actions Sheinbaum has taken against Washington's immigration enforcement practices, escalating tension even as the two governments were mid-negotiation over the USMCA joint review.
