UN Committee Requests General Assembly Action on Mexico's Enforced Disappearances Crisis

| Mexico

The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) took the historic step of requesting the UN Secretary-General to urgently refer Mexico's enforced disappearances crisis to the UN General Assembly. The Committee found 'well-founded indications' that enforced disappearances in Mexico have been committed as crimes against humanity — a landmark ruling. At least 132,828 people are currently listed as missing in Mexico's government registry. An estimated 4,500 clandestine graves have been found containing over 6,200 bodies and 4,600 sets of human remains. The Mexican government rejected the report as 'biased.' FIDH called it a 'historic decision' representing the first time the CED has escalated a case to the General Assembly.
