Claudia Sheinbaum Elected by Historic 59.7% — Morena Sweeps Congress

Claudia Sheinbaum (Morena) won the June 2, 2024 presidential election with 59.7% of the vote — the largest margin in Mexican democratic history. She defeated Xóchitl Gálvez (PAN/PRD/PRI coalition, 28.1%) and Jorge Álvarez Máynez (MC, 10.4%). Morena and allies also won supermajorities in both chambers of Congress, enabling constitutional amendments including the judicial reform. Sheinbaum, a climate scientist and former Mexico City mayor, was the first woman elected president in Mexico's 700-year history.
