Tren Maya Inaugurated — 1,525 km Railway Across Maya Heartland

President AMLO inaugurated the Tren Maya (Maya Train) passenger rail on December 16, 2023. The 1,525-km loop railway crosses five states (Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco, Yucatán) connecting the Yucatán Peninsula's tourist and archaeological sites. The $20+ billion project — the largest public infrastructure project in Mexican history — was built partly through Mexico's army (Sedena) and faced fierce criticism from Maya communities and environmentalists for routing through jungle and archaeological zones. UNESCO demanded emergency heritage protection during construction.
