Fall of Mexico City — US Flag Over the Halls of Montezuma

| Mexico-US Wars

General Winfield Scott rode into Mexico City's main plaza, the Zócalo, on September 14, 1847 — fulfilling the Marines' Hymn line 'From the Halls of Montezuma.' Santa Anna resigned the presidency and attempted to mount guerrilla operations. A riotous mob attacked US soldiers from rooftops and windows in the city; Scott declared martial law. The occupation of the capital effectively ended organized Mexican military resistance, though guerrilla activity continued for months.
