Army and National Guard Kill 3 Presumed CJNG Members in La Piedad, Michoacán Highway Clash; Armed Teen Wounded

Mexican Army and National Guard personnel clashed with an armed group on the La Piedad–Zamora federal highway near 'Rancho Monteverde,' in the settlement of El Pandillo, municipality of La Piedad, Michoacán, around midday on August 14, 2026. Gunmen traveling in two pickup trucks opened fire on the security convoy with assault rifles; the firefight extended roughly two kilometers along the highway. Three men were killed — one found in a pickup truck, two others in an SUV — and a 16-year-old low-ranking cartel member wearing tactical body armor was found seriously wounded at the roadside and transported to a regional hospital in La Piedad; the bodies were sent to the SEMEFO morgue. Authorities recovered four long guns, a grenade launcher, tactical vests, magazines, ammunition, and a dark gray Renault vehicle at the scene. Prosecutors said the four are believed to belong to a CJNG cell based on cartel-marked items recovered at the scene, though formal identification remained pending. The federal highway was closed for over two hours during the evidence-collection process.
