Trump Grants 90-Day Tariff Postponement; Mexico Extraditions Exceed 55+ Cartel Figures Under Cooperation Framework
The Trump administration agreed to postpone threatened 30% tariffs against Mexico for another 90 days as the bilateral security cooperation framework established around the El Mencho operation continues to deliver results. Approximately 85% of Mexican exports to the United States remain tariff-free under the existing arrangement. Mexico has transferred more than 55 high-value cartel targets to U.S. custody, with 93 cartel figures transferred outside formal deportation procedures between February 2025 and January 2026. The sustained extradition and transfer pipeline — which includes CJNG associates, Sinaloa cartel members, and cross-border trafficking network operatives — represents a significant diplomatic concession by the Sheinbaum administration, which has navigated domestic political pressure on sovereignty grounds while maintaining cooperation channels critical to anti-CJNG operations. DEA and HSI liaisons in Guadalajara, Culiacán, and Mexico City continue operating under the Joint Interagency Task Force–Counter Cartel (JITF-CC) framework stood up by U.S. NORTHCOM in January 2026. Current primary targeting priority remains El Jardinero (Audias Flores Silva) and residual CJNG financial networks linked to Los Cuinis.
