Rehabilitated University of Benghazi Reopens After Years of Reconstruction

| Libya Conflict

The University of Benghazi held an extravagant reopening ceremony on Friday, September 4, 2026, after the Fund for the Development and Reconstruction of Libya (FDRL), directed by Belgasem Haftar, completed a full rehabilitation of the campus that was destroyed during the fighting that flattened much of Benghazi. The ceremony was attended by House of Representatives Speaker Aguila Saleh, First Deputy Speaker Fawzi Al-Nuwairi, Second Deputy Speaker Misbah Douma, GNS Prime Minister Osama Hamad, and LNA Commander-in-Chief Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Officials described the project as upgrading higher-education infrastructure to provide an integrated university environment 'befitting the university's stature, history, and its academic and national role.' The reopening came a day before the second Libyan-American Development and Reconstruction Forum convened in Benghazi under the same FDRL reconstruction push.
