Atomic Bomb 'Fat Man' Dropped on Nagasaki; Japan Surrenders
On August 9, 1945, the US B-29 Bockscar dropped the plutonium bomb 'Fat Man' on Nagasaki, killing 40,000–80,000 people instantly. The same day, the Soviet Union declared war on Japan and invaded Manchuria. Emperor Hirohito recorded his surrender rescript on August 14; he broadcast it to Japanese citizens on August 15 — the first time most Japanese had heard his voice. Japan formally surrendered aboard USS Missouri on September 2, 1945.
